Smart Start, Inc. seeks a Senior Firmware Engineer to join the Engineering & Test team, focusing on embedded software, architecture, and cross-functional collaboration.

You will own firmware components from concept to production, work with hardware teams, and help raise standards across embedded products. This role offers a hybrid schedule in Grapevine, TX, with autonomy and opportunity to impact reliability and scalability.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related field.
• 5+ years of embedded systems development experience.
• Advanced proficiency in embedded C/C++ programming.
• Experience with RTOS and real-time systems.
• Hardware/software integration and debugging expertise.
• Board-level testing of PCBs and components.
• Proficiency with Python for test automation and utilities.
• Ability to own firmware components from concept to production.
• Strong analytical and communication skills.
• Experience with microcontroller platforms (Renesas, MSP430, Nordic) and protocols (I2C, SPI, UART, USB, Bluetooth).
• Familiarity with Agile (JIRA, SVN) preferred.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain embedded software and device drivers in C/C++ for production hardware.
• Architect firmware for RTOS real-time systems and event-driven designs.
• Lead interfaces including I2C, SPI, UART, USB, Bluetooth.
• Develop software for displays, sensors, and PID-controlled systems.
• Interpret schematics/datasheets to drive HW/SW decisions.
• Use lab equipment for debugging, validation, and root-cause analysis.
• Create Python scripts and test frameworks for flashing, configuration, testing, and logging.
• Design and document functional tests for PCBs and components.
• Perform board-level troubleshooting to isolate failures.
• Collaborate with hardware and test teams on PCB test requirements.
• Develop automated bench and HIL test environments.
• Mentor teammates and contribute to code reviews.
