ERG Fire Protection Engineer Job Description

ERG is a research and consulting firm providing support to federal, state, and commercial clients. We assemble multidisciplinary teams with expertise in engineering, science, economics, public health, IT, and communications. We seek highly motivated individuals with strong skills in prioritizing, performing, and communicating effectively in fast-paced environments.

We are seeking fire protection engineers with experience supporting operations and maintenance of fire protection systems (FPS) for high-hazard areas, such as chemical processing or explosives storage facilities. The position is based at a federal site in Indian Head, Maryland, working closely with engineers and technicians supporting a large campus with various fire detection, alarm, and suppression systems.

This full-time position involves interaction with ERG personnel on-site and from our Chantilly and Arlington offices. Indian Head is approximately 30 miles from Washington, DC, 25 miles from Alexandria, VA, and 60 miles from Fredericksburg, VA. Alternative work schedules may be considered.

Job Responsibilities:
  1. Plan, implement, or monitor preventive maintenance programs in compliance with federal, local, and industry standards.
  2. Provide engineering support for documenting and troubleshooting FPS operational issues.
  3. Identify and resolve compliance issues proactively.
  4. Document and develop requirements for capital improvement projects to enhance operations, including site visits, condition assessments, and preliminary scope/budget estimates.
  5. Conduct fire protection design reviews for facility improvement projects by third-party design firms.
  6. Develop or review test plans for FPS modifications or new systems.
  7. Assist in planning and scheduling testing activities.
  8. Analyze and recommend fire protection requirements, design, and space utilization through studies and forecasts.
  9. Evaluate existing operations to identify cost reduction or operational improvements.
  10. Collaborate effectively with stakeholders internally and externally.
  11. Serve as a project manager for selected projects.
Qualifications and Skills:
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in engineering with a minimum GPA of 3.0.
  • At least eight years of relevant experience with a fire protection engineering degree, or ten years with another engineering discipline.
  • Experience with NFPA 1, 101, 13, 15, 30, and 72 standards.
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills.
  • Experience supporting design and/or operations & maintenance of fire alarm and sprinkler systems, including FPS drawings and specifications.
  • Experience with specialized FPS systems like wet, dry, and pre-action systems.
  • Knowledge of life safety in hazardous environments.
  • PE license in Fire Protection Engineering preferred.
  • Ability to obtain a DoD Secret Security Clearance.
  • Experience with fire safety in high-hazard industrial facilities and DoD requirements such as NAVSEA OP-5 and UFC 3-600-01.
  • Experience with ultra-high-speed FPS and UV/IR detection technologies.
  • Knowledge of relevant building codes and regulations.
