Job Description

BEM has excellent opportunities for mid-level and senior-level environmental scientists, engineers or geologists to support the work executed from BEM’s Anchorage, Alaska office. We are currently accepting positions for seasonal and full-time employment. Seasonal positions generally extend from early to mid-May through early to mid-October.

The professional will work directly with Project Managers for the planning and executing of various projects for remedial investigations, contaminated soil remediation, and hazardous materials oversights. The work activities that may include permit preparation, logistical planning for equipment and staff mobilizations and de-mobilizations, participation and oversight of field sample collection activities (multiple media), subcontractor oversight, data analysis, client-interaction, schedule management, Quality Control inspections, and preparation of daily/weekly performance logs. This position’s main responsibilities are to support several projects under different managers, executing field investigations in challenging and remote locations throughout Alaska in accordance with regulatory approved work plans, conduct logistical planning for shipments of supplies and environmental samples to and from the job site(s), oversight and management of support contractors (drillers, land surveyors, geotechnical locators), maintaining compliance with State and Federal regulations, and completion/review of electronic field forms and boring/drilling logs while managing a team of experienced engineers, geologists and scientists. The workload will be field-heavy in the summers with much of the work being office-based in the winters.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Coordination with the Project Manager(s) on resource needs/balancing and maintaining the project schedule.
  • Logistical planning.
  • Providing support for preparing/maintaining permits.
  • Coordination of field events to maximize efficiency of the field team and subcontractors.
  • Leading field investigations and assessments for sampling of multi-media.
  • Preparation and/or QC review of daily logs by the field team.
  • Oversight of drilling activities using direct push technology or sonic drilling techniques.
  • Coordination and oversight of other project subcontractors.
  • Ensuring work activities are completed in accordance with approved work plans and State/Federal regulations.
  • Potential operation and maintenance of a water treatment system.
  • Management of investigative derived waste (IDW) and conducting weekly inspections/audits of waste storage areas.
  • Oversight and management of IDW loadout and disposal activities.
Qualifications

Requirements

  • Physically able to lift up to 35lbs multiple times per day and possessing a valid driver's license.
  • Past performance work in the State of Alaska is preferred.
  • Full-time position requires residency in Anchorage, Fairbanks, or surrounding area. Out of State residence may be considered for seasonal positions.
  • 5+ years of professional experience conducting and managing site investigations, assessments or remediation projects.
  • Ability to pass a background check to gain entry to Federal installations.
  • Ability to conduct or provide oversight for field activities for up to 4 weeks up to six days a week in duration at potential remote locations during the summer field season.
  • Familiarity with logistical scheduling of multiple vendors including but not limited to remote camp operators, charter aircraft, barge/watercraft providers, drillers, waste transport/disposal, and laboratory sample shipments.
  • Current HAZWOPER certification per 29 CFR 1910.120 and USACE EM 385 1-1 or ability to maintain certification prior to commencement of field work.
  • Past experience conducting Health and Safety inspections and audits is preferred.
  • Familiarity with ADEC Cleanup rules, regulations and guidance documents including 18 Alaska Administrative Codes (AAC) 60, 75 and 78 is preferred for full-time positions.
  • Familiarity with direct push technology or sonic rig drilling methods, heavy equipment operations for excavations and demolition of building materials.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Geology/Environmental Sciences or another related field would be preferred but direct experience would be considered as a trade-off to possessing an advanced educational degree.
  • Existing USACE Quality Control Management training is preferred.
  • Familiarity utilizing project scheduling applications and logging information into iPads or other electronic devices would be a preferred benefit.
  • Potential direct coordination/communication with the client, installation staff, or regulatory stakeholders may be required.

Abilities and Skills

  • Preferred field skills include ability to manage field teams up to 15 individuals consisting of BEM staff and a variety of support subcontractors.
  • Provide oversight of field activities to ensure work plan and regulatory compliance.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills. Past experience providing data entry into electronic devices (iPad or similar) is beneficial.
  • Ability to perform well under pressure, assist with the development and implementation of risk mitigation measures, and maintaining organization of project records and field tasks.
  • Mentoring of entry-level staff and QC of field teamwork efforts.
  • Ability to work extended hours beyond an 8-hour workday or 40-hour work week during periods of high volume.
  • Ability to travel to remote areas for potential extended periods of time (up to 4 weeks in duration) to complete field investigations.
  • Familiarity utilizing GPS technology for the collection of field data.
