Job summary

NYS Department of Transportation in New York is seeking a Principal Engineering Technician to support diverse engineering projects. You will perform complex technical activities, prepare reports, use CADD, review plans, and supervise lower-level technicians.

This role participates in NY HELPS, with appointments that may be non-competitive. Applicants must meet minimum Civil Service qualifications and be authorized to work in the United States.

Qualifications

• FOUR years of experience assisting in engineering or engineering technology, engineering management technology, architecture or architectural technology, environmental technology, drafting or surveying, AND graduation from high school or possession of a diploma issued by a recognized educational authority.
• An associate's degree in mathematics, physical science, geology, engineering or engineering technology AND TWO years of experience listed above in number 1.
• A bachelor's degree in mathematics, physical science, geology, engineering or engineering technology.

Responsibilities

• Prepare written reports and cost estimates of materials, supplies and equipment.
• Prepare plans and/or details utilizing CADD software.
• Developing or reviewing contract plans and specifications.
• Supervise lower-level technicians in design, construction inspection, surveying, traffic engineering, maintenance, planning, engineering research, and material testing.
• Plan and schedule field and laboratory test work, review test reports, and develop testing equipment and procedures.
• Use various computer applications in the performance of duties.
