Job summary

The New York State Department of Transportation, Region 4, Rochester, seeks a Principal Engineering Technician to support the Asset Management Unit. You will perform field inspections of culverts, pavements, and drainage systems, and enter data into GIS systems, enabling statewide asset visibility and decision-making.

You will assist with project scoping, data services oversight, and emergency response coordination, coordinating with regional asset management committees.

Qualifications

• Four years of engineering/engineering technology experience with HS diploma, OR associate's degree plus 2 years experience, OR bachelor's degree in engineering.
• Ability to perform field work independently and coordinate with supervisory chain.
• Experience with GIS, infrastructure inspection, and data collection.
• Eligible for NY HELPS non-competitive appointment or permanent competitive service.
• Authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis.

This Principal Engineering Technician position is with the New York State Department of Transportation, Region 4, primarily in the Asset Management Unit in Rochester. The role involves conducting field inspections of infrastructure such as culverts, pavement, and drainage systems, entering data into GIS applications, and supporting regional asset management committees. The incumbent will also assist with project scoping, data services oversight, and emergency response coordination as needed.

Key qualifications:

• Four years of experience in engineering or engineering technology with high school diploma, OR associate's degree in related field plus two years of relevant experience, OR bachelor's degree in engine
• Ability to conduct field work independently and coordinate work methodology with supervisory chain
• Experience with GIS applications, infrastructure inspection, and data collection
• Eligible for NY HELPS non-competitive appointment or permanent competitive service through Civil Service
• Must be authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis
