OTTO is developing the world’s first fifth-generation business jet, designed for sustainability through the innovative use of advanced super-laminar aerodynamics and high-precision, net-shaped composites. Flight tests of our technology demonstrator validate a dramatic reduction in fuel burn and allow a sizeable improvement in cabin comfort. Otto Aviation is designing world-class aircraft from first principles physics and delivering ground-breaking aircraft and economic performance.

About the Role

Otto Aviation is seeking a dynamic designer to contribute to the design, development, and integration of mechanical systems. You will join a team developing the world’s most efficient aircraft. Otto Aviation is seeking first principles designers that balance creativity with experience while working within an effective team atmosphere.

What You'll Do

  • Design, develop and detail mechanical system components for aerospace systems, ensuring compliance with technical specifications, performance standards, and regulatory requirements, to include the following:
    • Flight Controls (ATA 27)
    • Landing Gear (ATA 32)
    • Ice Protection (ATA 30)
  • Conduct trade studies for optimized, fit, form, and function of aerospace mechanical systems to include detailed system layouts and airframe integration in CATIA 3DExperience (3DX).
  • Coordinate with cross functional teams to define and validate mechanical interfaces with adjacent systems and structures.
    • Generate zonal reference models (ZRM), interface control models (ICM) and drawings (ICD) to define key interfaces with adjacent structures and systems.
    • Coordinate design and integration efforts with mechanical system suppliers.
  • Create both experimental and production digital product definition for components, assemblies, and installations, to include dimensions, materials, and processes necessary to fully define the configuration.
  • Develop kinematic models for dynamic mechanical systems, such as Flight Controls and Landing Gear.
  • Design composite, machined, and sheet metal components.
  • Perform tolerance stack-up analysis at component, assembly, and installation levels.
  • Produce bill of materials and assist in manufacturing assembly instructions.
  • Work with pilots and human factors on the design and layout of the crew interface for mechanical systems.
  • Work with maintenance and operation experts on meeting reliability and maintainability targets.
  • Technical oversight and mentorship of junior designers.

Who You Are

  • S., in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering, or equivalent.
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical systems common in modern Part 23 / Part 25 business aircraft.
  • 7+ years of industry experience in a closely related field.
  • Experience with fabrication methods of metallic and composite components and systems.
  • Experience with ASME Y14.100 Drawings and Y14.5 GD&T.
  • Experience with model and drawing checking, engineering part and model release, and engineering change process.
  • Experience in composite and metallic rapid prototyping (additive manufacturing) for both experimental and production applications.
  • Minimum of 1,000 hours utilizing CATIA V5, V6, or 3DX.
  • Familiarity of FAR Part 23 certification requirements and processes pertinent to mechanical systems.
  • Strong knowledge of industry standards and hands-on experience.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Where You'll Be

Otto Aviation is currently a remote workplace culture, with plans to secure a permanent headquarters for our corporate office in the next 2-3 years.

This position is a remote job that can be worked anywhere in the United States.
