Job summary

West Valley Demonstration Project is seeking a lead engineer to assume responsibility for one or more phases of an engineering discipline, performing and directing a wide range of technical duties.

The candidate will apply mastery of engineering principles, manage projects, and mentor junior staff. A BS in engineering with 8+ years' experience is required; DOE guidelines and 2D/3D modeling or PLC experience are preferred. Onsite work in Western New York.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in an engineering discipline plus 8+ years of professional engineering experience.
  • Graduate degree may substitute for some experience.
  • Experience with 2D/3D modeling software and PLC programming preferred.

Compensation: $109,447-$133,757/Annually

West Valley Cleanup Alliance is the prime contractor selected by the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Phase 1B Deactivation & Demolition Contract at the West Valley Demonstration Project site. The site is a scenic 30-minute drive south of Buffalo, New York. In cooperation with the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority, West Valley Demonstration Project continues to decontaminate and decommission facilities at this site.

JOB SUMMARY/PURPOSE OF POSITION

Assume lead engineering responsibility for one or more related phases of work of an engineering discipline as directed by a manager. The engineer will be required to perform and direct a wide variety of engineering and technical duties. The work requires mastery knowledge and application of engineering techniques, principles, and practices employed in the discipline area of assignment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A. Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor of Science or Technology degree in applicable engineering discipline from an accredited program plus a minimum of eight (8) years of professional engineering experience. Graduate degree in Engineering may be substituted for some experience. Requires the applications of engineering principles in a specialized technical field.

B. Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelors Degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Experience with 2D / 3D modeling software.
  • Experience with PLC Programming.

C. Other Requirements:

  • Must possess mastery knowledge of engineering theories, principles, techniques, policies, regulations, and legal requirements. Must be able to anticipate, identify and resolve a wide variety of complex issues. Must possess highly developed organizational skills and be able to manage projects and special assignments to deliver results on time and within budget.
  • Must be self-directed to establish priorities, work schedules, control cost and meet deadlines. Must be able to interpret and follow a wide variety of guidelines, policies, codes, and established practices to accomplish complex task. Must be able to direct the work of others, develop and implement special projects and resources, write procedures and guidelines and mentor others. Must be able to develop and execute short-term strategic plans.
  • Must plan, develop, and carry out strategic short-term programs essential to the mission.
  • Must demonstrate strong problem-solving skills. Must demonstrate research and creativity skills:
    • a. To determine solutions.
    • b. To receive assignments, gather information, and to present findings to manager or more senior engineers.
    • c. With engineers, technicians and crafts personnel to determine testing or operational requirements, give instructions in work procedures, and coordinate preparation of test results, work procedures, and other documentation required by the position.
    • d. To acquire information from customers or vendors.
  • Must be able to perform broad and intensive practices to establish concepts, theories, or programs, or to resolve complex problems. Must possess mastery knowledge of industry-specific software applications.
  • Must have extensive knowledge of DOE conduct of engineering requirements and establishment of implementation guidelines.
  • Must be able to use independent judgment to perform, identify, and analyze diverse engineering responsibilities involving different and unrelated engineering processes and methods.
  • Must be able to coordinate activities and provide technical direction to a group of lower-level engineering personnel. Must be able to direct clerical and technical personnel as assigned and required.
  • Must plan, develop, and carry out vital day-to-day programs essential to the mission.
  • Must be able to interface with individuals or groups from inside and outside of the organization, senior management, as well as high-ranking officials from outside the organization and at national and international levels. Must be able to justify, defend, negotiate, or settle engineering matters involving significant or controversial issues in accordance to engineering practices.

  • Oversee the preparation and scheduling to perform and integrate work.
  • Maintain and increase professional technical knowledge and proficiency.
  • Regular onsite attendance is required.
  • Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.
