Job summary

Intuitive Surgical, Inc. in Sunnyvale, CA is seeking a Senior Systems Research Engineer to join a forward‑looking team exploring embodied AI at the intersection of AI/ML and robotics.

You will architect, develop, and integrate embodied AI applications to de-risk and demonstrate technical feasibility, performance, and safety for high‑quality product development. You will partner with motion controls, perception, AI/ML, software, and hardware teams to address clinical, functional, and safety

Qualifications

• Master's degree or higher in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related technical field.
• Minimum 6 years of embedded systems software development experience, including R&D environments.
• Proficiency in C, C++, Python, and Matlab; experience with real-time, multi-threaded apps.
• Experience with industrial embedded OS (QNX, Yocto), IPC, hardware interfaces, and CUDA.
• Experience with ML models and frameworks such as PyTorch, TensorFlow, etc.
• Expertise in AI/ML-based embedded solutions, including training/fine-tuning foundation models and hardware acceleration.
• Robotics experience: motion control, perception, sensor fusion, path planning, optimization for resource-constrained platforms.
• Strong problem-solving and communication skills.

Responsibilities

• System Architecture & Integration: design interfaces between edge AI, firmware, OS, hardware, and cloud services; ensure reliability and performance.
• Robotic Control & Data Pipelines: build data pipelines, real-time systems for sensor fusion and control; optimize for embedded platforms.
• Engineering Excellence: write maintainable code, modular architecture, thorough testing, document IP, explore multiple frameworks.
• Project Ownership & Strategy: lead end-to-end embodied intelligence projects; define robot platform roadmap and participate in design reviews.
• Cross-Functional Collaboration: work with motion controls, perception, hardware teams to meet safety and clinical requirements.
• Iterative Development: balance feasibility with schedules and resources; transition from exploration to deeper implementation.
