Job summary

Caterpillar Inc. is seeking an Embedded Software Senior Engineer in Illinois. You will design, develop, and test software for machine subsystems, using iterative development to deliver features quickly. You will produce high-quality C/C++ code for embedded platforms, working with RTOS and Linux environments.

The role requires collaboration with embedded software, validation, and systems engineering teams. Domestic relocation is available; visa sponsorship is not. Travel up to 10% may be required.

Qualifications

• Experience developing production-quality C/C++ software for embedded systems.
• Experience with RTOS and Linux environments for embedded software.
• Proficiency with GoogleTest-based unit testing and embedded build-system workflows.
• Strong scripting and debugging skills (Python, Bash).
• Ability to work independently and collaborate with cross-functional teams.

Responsibilities

• Gather and analyze user and client needs to define software requirements for components and subsystems used across multiple products.
• Promote design consistency across products by contributing to product and software architecture discussions.
• Identify common issues, risks, and considerations throughout the development life cycle.
• Develop production-quality C/C++ software, including design, documentation, coding, quality assurance, and validation.
