Job summary

NRG Energy, via Vivint Smart Home, is seeking a Senior Embedded Software Engineer in Seattle. The position requires in-office presence with a hybrid schedule: in the office Monday–Thursday and a work-from-home day on Friday; the start is remote and will transition to hybrid.

You will implement embedded software in C/C++, work on embedded Linux, and help integrate BSPs and drivers, with Yocto/Buildroot, hardware bring-up, JTAG and logic analyzers, and IoT protocols.

Qualifications

• Minimum of 5 years of professional software development experience.
• BS in Computer Engineering, CS, or related field.
• Strong proficiency in C and modern C++.
• Deep understanding of embedded Linux, kernel, drivers, and boot chain.
• Experience with Yocto, Buildroot, or similar.
• Experience with Python or Rust.
• IoT protocols: HTTP, MQTT, JSON, Protobufs.
• Development in Linux environments, cross-compiling, testing.

Responsibilities

• Hybrid schedule in Seattle: in-office M–Th, with a work-from-home day on Friday.
• Collaborate across hardware and software to bring up boards and drivers.
• Develop embedded software for a smart home platform.
• Build and customize Linux distributions via Yocto/Buildroot.
• Debug hardware/software boundary with test equipment.
