Job summary

NRG Energy is seeking a Senior Embedded Software Engineer to join the Smart Home team in Seattle. The role starts remote and transitions to a hybrid schedule with in-office presence Monday to Thursday and a work-from-home day on Friday.

You will design and implement software for embedded systems, write drivers, and work across Linux, Yocto/Buildroot, and hardware debugging tools. Strong C, C++, and Linux expertise, plus experience with IoT protocols, are required.

Qualifications

• Minimum of 5 years of professional software development experience.
• BS in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a closely related field.
• Strong proficiency in C and modern C++.
• Embedded Linux: kernel, drivers, boot chain basics.
• Experience with Yocto, Buildroot or similar.
• Hardware debugging: board bring-up; read schematics/datasheets; JTAG and oscilloscopes.
• Experience with BSPs/drivers integration.
• Python or Rust experience.
• IoT protocols: HTTP, MQTT, JSON, Protobufs.
• Cross-compiling, unit testing in Linux environments.
