Job summary

General Motors is hiring a Staff Software Engineer, Embedded Radio Software and Connectivity in Austin, TX for a hybrid role. The candidate will develop Linux kernel drivers, lead system bring-up, and optimize hardware-software integration for automotive infotainment and embedded radio systems.

The role requires 8+ years in embedded Linux, BSP experience, and strong low-level debugging skills. Collaboration with hardware teams and support for manufacturing are key components of the job.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or a related field. Advanced degree preferred.
  • 8+ years of embedded Linux kernel development, device driver programming, and board bring-up.
  • Experience with BLE, UWB and connected system bring-up.
  • Deep knowledge of BSP development, bootloaders and firmware integration.
  • Knowledge of UART, PCIe, I2C, SPI, CAN, Ethernet protocols.
  • Experience with Ethernet (WLAN, LAN) and GNSS/RTC peripherals.
  • Expertise in embedded RTOS kernel internals (Linux, QNX, FreeRTOS, etc.).
  • Proficiency in diagnostics, health monitoring, and fault detection for embedded systems.
  • Manufacturing and production support, hardware validation, firmware flashing, end-of-line testing.
  • Proficiency with low-level debugging tools (JTAG, GDB, ftrace, kdump, perf).
  • Experience with SoC architectures (NXP, Qualcomm) and register-level hardware interaction.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and cross-functional collaboration.
  • Excellent communication for cross-functional teamwork.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and enhance Linux kernel and device drivers for multimedia subsystems and networking (WLAN, LAN, BLE, BT5.0).
  • Lead system bring-up, BSP development, and low-level debugging.
  • Integrate USB, PCIe, I2C, SPI, CAN, Ethernet peripherals into the embedded stack.
  • Develop diagnostics and health monitoring for automotive systems.
  • Analyze and troubleshoot low-level system issues across software and hardware.
  • Support manufacturing with hardware validation, firmware flashing, and end-of-line testing.
  • Collaborate with hardware teams to validate platform issues.
  • Define OKRs and drive software stability and performance improvements.
