Job summary

General Motors is seeking a Staff Software Engineer in Compute Systems Software to lead embedded Linux work for GM’s in-vehicle compute platforms. You will own kernel, BSP integration, device drivers, and boot/recovery paths, delivering robust, scalable platform software across ARM SoCs.

You will collaborate with Android Automotive OS, safety, validation, and silicon vendors, driving architecture, debugging, and upstreaming while mentoring teams and improving build pipelines.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical/Computer Engineering, or a related field; or equivalent practical experience.
• 10+ years of professional embedded systems, kernel-level, or platform software development; automotive or similar complex embedded domains.
• Strong proficiency in C, plus Python and shell scripting for automation, tooling, diagnostics, and debugging.

Responsibilities

• Own critical compute platform components from kernel configuration to device drivers and low-level system services.
• Lead Yocto-based embedded Linux distributions and reproducible image generation for multiple vehicle programs.
• Design, debug, and optimize boot, recovery, health-monitoring, and platform software across hardware and software boundaries.
• Mentor engineers through reviews, cross-team debugging, and platform-wide engineering standards.
