Job summary

Boston Engineering in Waltham, MA is seeking a Lead Firmware Engineer. This hands-on role focuses on embedded and firmware development, including RTOS-based systems, hardware bring-up, and driver development.

You will design, code, debug, and integrate with cross-functional teams to deliver robust solutions. You will set technical direction, mentor engineers, review designs, and help push projects from concept to production.

Qualifications

• 7+ years embedded/firmware experience; 3+ years in a senior/lead role.
• BS in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field; MS preferred.
• Strong C and C++ for embedded; Python for tooling/testing.
• Hands-on RTOS experience such as FreeRTOS, ROS2, Zephyr or similar.
• Experience with STM32, ARM-based MCUs/SoCs, x86, PIC32 or similar.
• Experience with I2C, SPI, UART, Ethernet, GPIO, and other low-level interfaces.
• Experience with Git, embedded development tools, build systems, and debugging environments.
• Experience authoring and reviewing software requirements, specifications, and design documentation.
• Experience leading technical and design reviews.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance.

Responsibilities

• Hands-on firmware development and debugging.
• Systems design and architecture for embedded platforms.
• Integrate firmware with hardware, sensors, and control systems.
• Mentor engineers on firmware architecture and best practices.
• Lead design reviews and roadmap planning.
• Support development workflows, integration, and production transition.
• Communicate technical concepts, tradeoffs, and risks to stakeholders.
