Job summary

Boston Engineering Corporation in Waltham, MA is seeking a hands-on Principal Firmware Engineer. The role focuses on embedded and firmware with RTOS-based systems, hardware bring-up, and close collaboration with electrical and mechanical teams.

You will own embedded software at tactical and strategic levels, set direction, and drive best practices across projects. The ideal candidate will have 7+ years in embedded/firmware, strong C/C++ skills, and experience with FreeRTOS, ROS2, Zephyr.

Qualifications

• BS or MS in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field.
• 7+ years of experience in embedded/firmware development with 3+ years in a senior or technical lead role.
• Fluency in C and C++ for embedded systems, and Python for tooling/testing.
• Hands-on experience with RTOS environments (FreeRTOS, ROS2, Zephyr).
• Experience with embedded targets (STM32, ARM MCUs/SoCs, x86, PIC32).
• Experience with I2C, SPI, UART, Ethernet, GPIO and low-level interfaces.

Responsibilities

• Own embedded software at tactical and strategic levels, ensure correct architecture and early risk identification.
• Set technical direction, document software processes, and raise the embedded engineering bar across projects.
• Lead technical design reviews and roadmap planning with a focus on system-level feasibility.
• Collaborate with electrical and mechanical teams to ensure hardware-software integration.
• Mentor engineers on firmware architecture, debugging techniques, and best practices.
