Job summary

The NYC Department of Buildings is seeking an Administrative Inspector (Electrical) to oversee a unit responsible for inspecting electrical installations in buildings to ensure compliance with NYC Construction Codes and Electrical Code. You will plan, direct, and coordinate work, supervise staff, enforce laws, testify as needed, and maintain thorough records and reports.

The role requires extensive experience in electrical inspection and a valid professional license.

Qualifications

• Seven years of full-time satisfactory experience as an electrician, designer, or inspector of electrical installations for light, heat and/or power distribution, at least eighteen months in a managerial capacity.
• Five years as described in 1 with 18 months in a managerial capacity and 60 credits towards a degree in electrical engineering or two years of technical school training.
• Completion of an apprentice program in electrical trade or inspection with required related experience.
• Education and/or experience equivalent to 1–3 with at least two years of experience as described in 1.

Responsibilities

• Plan, direct, and coordinate the work of the unit.
• Assign, supervise, and evaluate the work of subordinates.
• Inform staff of problems requiring senior staff intervention.
• Meet inspectors regularly to resolve concerns about duties or policies.
• Meet with unit personnel monthly to review operations.
• Deploy personnel for maximum efficiency and service.
• Explain and enforce laws and rules relevant to the field.
• Testify as needed (ECB, depositions, court).
• Maintain records and prepare reports.
• Issue stop work orders when necessary.
• Represent the Department at meetings with public/private entities.
• Plan and conduct special surveys and investigations.
• Identify unsafe building conditions and refer for engineering review.

Professional Engineer license (P.E.) or Registered Architect
