Job summary

Synchron Inc. is seeking a Senior R&D Engineer to own the electrical and FPGA design of implantable electronics from concept to verification. You will define HDL for a low-power FPGA, manage safety-critical logic, and shape the electrical architecture including inductive charging and RF telemetry.

The role requires hands-on FPGA development, experience with Altium, and strong collaboration with firmware, silicon, and mechanical teams. Remote work is not specified; on-site at San Diego, CA.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or a related discipline.
  • 8+ years in mixed-signal hardware design for miniaturized, high-reliability electronic systems.
  • 5+ years of hands-on FPGA development: synthesizable VHDL or SystemVerilog, clock-domain crossing, timing closure, and simulation-based verification on low-power FPGA.
  • Working knowledge of serial interfaces: LVDS/CML, SPI/I2C, framing and error detection, register-map design.
  • Demonstrated design of safety-relevant or fault-tolerant digital systems: watchdogs, redundant monitors, fail-safe defaults, fault detection and isolation.
  • Hands-on experience with inductive power transfer or near-field wireless charging, or equivalent resonant/magnetics design.
  • High-density PCB and flex-circuit design in Altium Designer; signal integrity and DFM at implant scale.
  • Ability to read, debug, and review embedded C firmware and test software, and contribute when needed.

Responsibilities

  • Own HDL design for implant's low-power FPGA including health, status, control, and communications controller.
  • Define and verify FPGA/MCU interface and bring-up strategy.
  • Develop timing-closure, clock-domain crossing, and self-checking testbenches for safety-relevant logic.
  • Define high-speed sensor communications link, framing, synchronization, and error detection; verify with FPGA emulation.
  • Design electrical architecture including inductive charging, RF telemetry, and PCB/flex design for implant scale.
  • Lead verification plans and testing per IEC standards; perform failure analysis and design-for-reliability.
  • Collaborate with firmware, silicon, mechanical, and systems engineers to optimize the implant design.
