Job summary

Placements24 is seeking an experienced Electrical Design Engineer for a hybrid role in Upington, Northern Cape. You will design electrical systems for utility-scale solar PV plants and energy storage, engaging across feasibility, detailed engineering, procurement, and construction support.

The ideal candidate has 5+ years in renewable electrical design, strong power-system analysis skills, and proficiency with PVSyst, AutoCAD Electrical, and ETAP.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering.
• Minimum 5 years of experience in electrical design engineering with renewables, especially solar PV.
• Solid understanding of power system analysis and electrical design principles for utility-scale projects.
• Proficiency with electrical design and simulation software (PVSyst, AutoCAD Electrical, ETAP).
• Knowledge of grid codes, interconnection standards, and SA electrical regulations.
• Experience with battery energy storage systems (BESS) is a strong advantage.

Responsibilities

• Develop electrical designs for utility-scale solar PV projects, including collection systems and substation layouts.
• Perform load flow, short circuit, and protection coordination studies for AC/DC systems.
• Specify electrical equipment such as inverters, transformers, switchgear, cables, and mounting structures.
• Prepare detailed electrical drawings, schematics, and specifications using industry-standard software.
• Conduct site assessments and feasibility studies for new renewable energy sites.
• Provide technical support during procurement, construction, and commissioning phases.
• Ensure designs comply with relevant electrical codes and client requirements.
• Collaborate with civil, mechanical, and environmental engineers and project managers.
• Review EPC proposals for technical compliance.
• Assist in troubleshooting electrical issues during project execution and operation.
