Job summary

Avantor is seeking an EHSS&S Manager to lead development and administration of programs ensuring compliance with environmental, occupational health and safety regulations. This full‑time role is based in Bakersfield, CA, overseeing a team of professionals and influencing short‑term operational results within the department.

Requirements include a Bachelor's degree in engineering or related field, 10+ years of experience with at least 5 years in leadership, and ability to travel up to 25%.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in engineering or related scientific field.
• 10+ years of relevant work experience;
• 5+ years leadership experience.
• Ability to travel up to 25% (as needed).
• Strong leadership, organizational, decision‑making and analytical skills.
• Working knowledge of industrial hygiene analysis and best practices, and medical monitoring programs.

Responsibilities

• Identify and appraise risk conditions which could produce occupational injuries or illnesses.
• Evaluate potential extent of injuries and classify workstations.
• Cooperate with employees' council or labor union on occupational health and safety.
• Ensure training for employees entering work areas.
• Implement strategies to minimize injuries and illnesses.
• Manage hazardous waste programs and ensure proper storage/transport per rules.
• Conduct and coordinate regulatory compliance audits and address findings.
• Develop contingency plans with local partners for emergencies.
• Work with HR and Legal to reduce workers' compensation costs.
• Complete incident investigations and site hazard assessments.
• Provide environmental, health and safety training.
• Collaborate with Facility Manager on security measures.
• Support sustainability initiatives with the Sustainability Manager.
• Lead the Process Safety Management Program.
