Job summary

The EI Group, Inc. is seeking a Senior EHS Compliance and Manufacturing Engineer to lead environmental health and safety compliance and ISO management system initiatives for industrial clients.

This senior, client-facing role requires deep expertise in manufacturing operations, regulatory compliance, and engineering systems. You will conduct audits, gap analyses, and risk-based reviews, while mentoring junior staff and supporting business development.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Environmental Science, or related technical discipline.
  • PE license required.
  • 15+ years supporting manufacturing, industrial, or process-based operations.
  • Strong knowledge of manufacturing processes, engineering systems, and environmental permitting.
  • Experience with OSHA, EPA, RCRA, EPCRA, SPCC, and related compliance requirements.
  • Experience preparing facilities for ISO certification audits and maintaining management systems.
  • Ability to conduct audits, risk assessments, and technical evaluations.
  • Strong communication, technical writing, and project management skills.
  • Ability to travel to client facilities as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Lead EHS compliance assessments for industrial and manufacturing facilities.
  • Evaluate manufacturing processes, utilities, equipment, and operational systems for regulatory compliance and risk reduction.
  • Prepare technical reports, permit applications, and compliance documentation.
  • Interpret and apply federal, state, and local regulations related to air permitting, wastewater, SPCC, hazardous waste, EPCRA/SARA, and industrial safety.
  • Lead ISO management system gap assessments, implementation support, and internal audits (ISO 14001, 45001, 50001).
  • Develop procedures, audit protocols, and risk registers; prepare clients for third-party certification audits.
  • Conduct root cause analysis and corrective/preventive action reviews.
  • Support continuous improvement and management system integration.
  • Review manufacturing and production systems to identify risks; assist with process safety and equipment modifications.

SENIOR EHS COMPLIANCE AND MANUFACTURING ENGINEER

The EI Group, Inc., a full-service environmental engineering, occupational safety, health consulting, and training firm with 125 employees headquartered in Research Triangle Park, NC, with satellite offices throughout the southeast US, is seeking a highly experienced Senior EHS & Manufacturing Compliance Engineer to support industrial and manufacturing clients. This senior-level, client-facing role requires expertise in manufacturing operations, environmental and safety compliance, engineering systems, and ISO management systems. The ideal candidate will lead compliance assessments, audits, engineering reviews, and operational improvement initiatives while also supporting business development and mentoring junior staff.

Key Responsibilities
Environmental, Health & Safety Compliance
  • Lead EHS compliance assessments for industrial and manufacturing facilities.
  • Evaluate manufacturing processes, utilities, equipment, and operational systems for regulatory compliance and risk reduction.
  • Prepare technical reports, permit applications, and compliance documentation.
  • Interpret and apply federal, state, and local regulations related to:
    1. Air permitting and emissions
    2. Wastewater and pretreatment
    3. Stormwater and SPCC programs
    4. Hazardous waste (RCRA)
    5. EPCRA/SARA reporting
    6. Industrial hygiene and occupational safety
ISO Management Systems
  • Lead gap assessments, implementation support, and internal audits for:
    1. ISO 14001
    2. ISO 45001
    3. ISO 50001
  • Develop procedures, operational controls, audit protocols, and risk registers.
  • Prepare clients for third-party certification audits.
  • Conduct root cause analysis and corrective/preventive action reviews.
  • Support continuous improvement and management system integration.
Manufacturing & Engineering Support
  • Review manufacturing and production systems to identify operational, environmental, and safety risks.
  • Evaluate process flow, material handling, ventilation, utilities, and equipment layouts.
  • Support engineering reviews involving:
    1. Process safety
    2. Hazardous area classification
    3. Dust hazard analysis
    4. Facility and equipment modifications
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Environmental Science, or related technical discipline.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license required.
  • 15+ years supporting manufacturing, industrial, or process-based operations.
  • Strong knowledge of manufacturing processes, engineering systems, and environmental permitting.

  • Experience with PSM/PHA.
  • Combustible dust analysis.
  • Familiarity with sustainability initiatives such as energy reduction and waste minimization.
