Job summary

Springer Nature US is seeking an Associate/Senior Editor for BMC Surgery and BMC Urology in a hybrid role based in New York or Philadelphia. The role focuses on editorial handling, content development, and building strong relationships with Editorial Board Members and authors.

You will lead strategy, commission reviews, and oversee manuscript evaluation to ensure rigorous, novel and impactful content across the BMC journal suite.

Qualifications

• PhD or MD level in surgery, urology, or related discipline.
• Substantial editorial experience in scientific publishing.
• Ability to critically evaluate scientific content and manuscripts for rigor, novelty, relevance, and impact.
• Excellent written and verbal communication with a customer-focused approach.

Responsibilities

• Develop a journal development strategy for BMC Surgery and BMC Urology using data-driven planning.
• Collaborate with Journals Group colleagues to support publishing strategies and initiatives.
• Identify, commission, and develop reviews, collections, and supplements with strong community partnerships.
• Oversee editorial handling of manuscripts with rigorous scientific evaluation.
• Make editorial decisions and guide Editorial Board Members while maintaining high standards.
• Resolve publishing and research integrity cases with resilience and ethics.
• Collaborate with internal teams to resolve editorial issues and maintain author satisfaction.
• Contribute to editorial policy development with evidence-based thinking.
• Build relationships with Editorial Board Members, reviewers, and authors.
• Lead discussions with Senior Board Members on strategy, recruitment, policy updates, and content development.
• Support recruitment, onboarding, training, and ongoing engagement of Editorial Board Members.
• Organize and lead Editorial Board meetings with strong communication and organizational skills.
• Ensure adherence to journal policies and editorial standards.
• Partner with marketing to increase visibility and engagement.
• Develop website content, blogs, and social media to showcase BMC values.
• Represent the journals at conferences and networking events to build community relationships.
• Contribute to a supportive editorial culture and handle high workloads with resilience.
