Job summary

Springer Nature US is seeking an Associate/Senior Editor for BMC Surgery and BMC Urology. The role combines editorial handling, content development, and stakeholder management within a hybrid setup based in New York or Philadelphia.

You will work with the Editorial Board and internal teams to advance journal strategy, quality and visibility, while coordinating reviews, supplements and policy updates. A PhD/MD and substantial publishing experience are required.

Qualifications

• PhD/MD in surgery, urology or related discipline.
• Substantial editorial experience in scientific publishing is required for Senior Editor level.
• Demonstrated ability to evaluate scientific content for rigor, novelty and impact.
• Strong editorial decision-making with evidence-based judgment.
• Excellent written and verbal communication with a customer-focused approach.

Responsibilities

• Develop a journal development strategy for BMC Surgery and BMC Urology.
• Collaborate with Journals Group to support publishing strategies and initiatives.
• Identify, commission and develop reviews, collections and supplements through community engagement.
• Oversee editorial handling of manuscripts ensuring rigor, novelty and impact.
• Make sound editorial decisions and guide Editorial Board Members.
• Resolve publishing and integrity cases with ethical and procedural rigor.
• Collaborate with internal teams to resolve editorial issues and maintain author satisfaction.
• Contribute to editorial policy development with critical judgment.
• Build relationships with Editorial Board Members, reviewers and authors.
