Position Overview

The Senior Director of Philanthropy reports directly to the Chief Philanthropy Officer and works to achieve VFC’s fundraising goals in a heavily data and process driven environment. The Senior Director of Philanthropy is mission oriented and provides strategy and leadership to generate necessary program and operating funds. This position oversees cohesive marketing and communications to achieve necessary donor and volunteer support. The Senior Director of Philanthropy acts as a thought partner to the Chief Philanthropy Officer and serves as a role model in cultivating a culture of high expectations and support. This position advocates for the organization and engages and mobilizes individuals to advance advocacy efforts in Riverside County.

Essential Duties

As Senior Director of Philanthropy you will be responsible for the following:

Development

• Develop and oversee portfolio of major and medium-sized gifts, from identification, to cultivation, to solicitation, to stewardship, securing upwards of $1,000,000 in individual donor revenue for the Agency. Increase and expand individual donor base each year by 10 to 20% to accommodate needed growth in service of children in foster care.
• Supervise various giving campaigns including year-end and spring appeals, recurring gifts, stock transfers, planned giving, and one-time events.
• Oversee a Philanthropy Manager responsible for small to medium-sized gifts, third party events, some corporate giving, and other relationships as assigned.
• In collaboration with the CEO and Chief Philanthropy Officer, prepare solicitations for planned gifts and endowment.
• Work in tandem with San Diego counterpart or San Diego-based Philanthropy Team to design, implement, and evaluate an organization-wide and comprehensive donor relations and stewardship system that appropriately recognizes and promotes interaction with all donors at all levels.
• Oversee all CRM activities for the Riverside County program including donor lists for specific solicitations, donor giving analysis, and reporting and data extraction for future giving.
• Make recommendations for revenue goals for direct mail, online giving, special campaigns, and major gifts.
• Consistently identify new and diverse sources of individual funding and some corporate funding opportunities.
• Ensure data accuracy and reporting as well as evaluate and recommend future software and systems upgrades.
• Responsible for actively and effectively stewarding all individual / event donors at all levels.
• Draft campaign materials, annual appeals, and other print and e-correspondence as needed.
• Create and implement systems that ensure the successful and effective implementation of annual development plans.
• Develop, prioritize design and implement new mission driven strategies and best practices in liaison with the Chief Philanthropy Officer and President/CEO.

Supervision

• Provide direct supervision and oversight for the Philanthropy Manager responsible for small to medium-sized gifts, third party events, some corporate giving, and other relationships as assigned.
• Conduct written, annual performance goals and evaluations for direct reports.

Job Qualifications

The successful applicant to this position will meet the following criteria:

• Willing and able to do extensive daily travel throughout Riverside County and frequently travel to San Diego County as needed.
• Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience.
• A minimum of five to seven years proven experience and a successful track record at a nonprofit organization(s) in the following areas is required: Individual giving and major gifts, corporate giving; private foundations and advanced stewardship.
• Knowledge of all aspects of fundraising (major gifts, annual giving, etc.) as well as understanding and adhering to the standards, codes and ethical principles of the field.
• Proficient with MS Office suite, including Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Excel.
• Knowledge of planned giving platforms (e.g., Crescendo).
• Strong relationship-building abilities and the capacity to work effectively with San Diego and Riverside Counties’ diverse political, philanthropic and community leaders.
• Adept at fundraising strategy and planning and sustaining excellent relationships.
• Proven ability to prospect, secure and maintain donor relationships.
• Ability to develop and mentor junior fundraisers.
• Willing and able to harness their personal and professional networks to support the organization’s mission.
• Exceptional writing, communication, presentation, editing and proofreading skills. Demonstrated ability to communicate verbally and in writing effectively across various audiences and with a broad group of stakeholders.
• Prior experience managing, supervising, and motivating staff and volunteers across multiple generations.
• Understanding of event planning and budget management.
• Demonstrated ability to nimbly adjust to shifting priorities, balancing multiple tasks efficiently and effectively.
• Strong interpersonal skills, and high-degree of confidentiality and discretion.
• Strong project management skills and a drive to efficiently meet deadlines and goals quickly.
• Excellent research and organizational skills with strong attention to detail and accuracy.
• Ability to listen intently, think creatively, be strategic and focus on results.
• Must meet all screening requirements as set forth in the California Rules of Court, Rule 5.655.

The ideal candidate will meet some if not all of the following criteria:

• Graduate Degree or equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience
• Work experience in a public relations firm.
• Experience using Adobe Creative Suite.
• Experience using Raiser’s Edge by Blackbaud, fundraising databases and search engines, (e.g., the Foundation Center, Lexis, Wealth Engine, Google).
• Experience writing in a professional capacity (e.g., grant-writing, creating marketing content, or other writing for persuasive purposes).
• Knowledge of the philanthropic landscape in inland Southern California, specifically Riverside County.
• A proven track record of increasing revenue year over year for a growing program.

COMPENSATION, WORK LOCATION & SCHEDULE

$115,000 -$130,000 DOE
This is an exempt, remote-based position. Standard work week is 40 hours; however, employees are expected to work any additional time necessary to meet deadlines and complete assignments. Evenings and weekends may be required. Additional hours are not subject to overtime pay.
