Job summary

University Hospital in Newark, NJ seeks a senior leader to head Labor Relations, directing day-to-day operations, contract negotiations, and compliance with bargaining agreements, while aligning labor priorities with hospital operations and financial goals.

You will develop staff, provide training on contract administration, and serve as the Chief Negotiator with unions, partnering with HRBPs to maintain open labor-management relations and ensure strategic workforce stability.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in HR, labor relations or related field plus 7+ years in labor relations, with multiple collective bargaining agreements.
• Master’s or J.D. and NJ license strongly preferred plus 5+ years in labor/employment law.
• Thorough knowledge of employment and labor law regulations.
• Outstanding human relations and leadership skills in a team environment.
• Experience in a unionized environment.

Responsibilities

• Develops and executes the hospital’s labor relations strategy under the CHRO, aligning bargaining priorities with operations and finances.
• Provides leadership and staff development, including performance assessment and feedback.
• Oversees data collection, analysis, reports and communications.
• Directs department operations and strives for budget alignment and operational excellence.
• Ensures compliance with bargaining agreements across the hospital.
• Serves as Chief Negotiator for collective bargaining with staff and housestaff unions.
• Partners with HRBPs and L&D to train supervisors on contract administration and discipline.
