Ally and Your Career

Ally Financial only succeeds when its people do - and that’s more than some cliché people put on job postings. We love this stuff! We see our people as, well, people - with interests, families, friends, dreams, and causes that are all important to them. Our focus is on the health and safety of our teammates as well as work-life balance and diversity and inclusion. From generous benefits to a variety of employee resource groups, we strive to build paths that encourage employees to stretch themselves professionally. We want to help you grow, develop, and learn new things. You’re constantly evolving, so shouldn’t your opportunities be, too?

Work Schedule

Ally designates roles as (1) fully on-site, (2) hybrid, or (3) fully remote. Hybrid roles are generally expected to be in the office a certain number of days per week as indicated by your manager. Your hiring manager will discuss this role's specific work requirements with you during the hiring process. All work requirements are subject to change at any time based on leader discretion and/or business need.

The Opportunity

The Senior Director – Fraud & Payments Risk is a newly created, independent second-line leadership role accountable for building and maturing Ally’s enterprise oversight framework across fraud and payments risk. This leader will advance the governance structure, policy framework, risk appetite, reporting, and effective challenge model across all business lines and first-line fraud and payments execution functions, providing direct, real-time visibility into fraud and payments outcomes.

Reporting to the Executive Director of Operational Risk, with direct interaction with the Chief Risk Officer and in collaboration with Legal and Compliance partners, this leader will develop and enhance appropriate governance forums, manage the fraud and payments risk appetite framework, and prepare reporting for the ERMC and Board Risk Committee. The role will advise, enable, and challenge modernization of Ally’s fraud and payments ecosystem as the company deepens and expands primary banking relationships across Consumer Banking, particularly deposits and investing. It will help balance innovation, customer experience, and profitable growth as consumer expectations, fraud typologies, payment capabilities, and the broader threat landscape continue to evolve. The role also serves as a central connector across fraud, payments, cyber, AML, and identity risk domains, supporting Ally’s transition toward a converged, threat-aligned enterprise protection model.

The Work Itself
  • Fraud & Payments Risk Policy & Governance
  • Evolve, own, and maintain the enterprise fraud and payments risk oversight framework, including applicable policies, risk taxonomies, risk appetite statements, governance, and second-line roles and responsibilities, in alignment with the Enterprise Risk Management Policy and Enterprise Risk Management Roles and Responsibilities Standard.
  • Establish, support, and enhance appropriate governance forums, setting agenda priorities around risk appetite performance, material fraud and payments events, thematic first-line performance, emerging risks, and audit or regulatory issue closure.
  • Independent Oversight & Effective Challenge
  • Independently identify, assess, measure, monitor, test, and report on fraud and payments risk across the enterprise, including aggregated risk across business lines and first-line fraud and payments functions.
  • Provide effective challenge to first-line fraud and payments strategies, products, detection rules, thresholds, controls, customer-experience decisions, and the enterprise fraud technology roadmap, without assuming ownership of first-line execution.
  • Review and challenge business-line and enterprise RCSA results, control design, new and modified products or payment capabilities, and issue remediation plans related to fraud and payments risk, partnering with the RCSA Program and Internal Audit.
  • Risk Reporting & Escalation
  • Deliver regular fraud and payments risk appetite, KRI, and KPI reporting to the CRO, ERMC, and applicable Risk Committees, including trend analysis on fraud losses, payment risks, attack patterns, customer impacts, and control effectiveness.
  • Escalate material fraud and payments events, emerging risks, and risk appetite breaches to the CRO and relevant governance committees in a timely manner.
  • Support annual and periodic enterprise fraud and payments risk program health reporting to the Audit Committee and Board, in partnership with Compliance and first-line fraud and payments functions.
  • Enterprise Threat Convergence, Modernization & Cross-Functional Leadership
  • Serve as the Risk representative on cross-domain “attack journey” and modernization teams spanning fraud, payments, cyber, identity, and AML.
  • Partner with Compliance, Cyber, Technology, Consumer Banking, and business-line leadership to close visibility gaps between fraud, payments, cyber, and financial-crime risk data and reporting.
  • Provide risk input into enterprise payments modernization, identity and authentication (CIAM) strategy, AI-enabled fraud detection initiatives, and other emerging-risk technology investments, helping leaders balance innovation, customer experience, risk management, and profitable growth.
The Qualifications We’re Looking For
  • 12+ years of relevant experience in fraud risk management, payments risk, operational risk management, financial crimes, or a related independent risk management discipline within a large, regulated financial institution.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated experience operating within a Three Lines of Defense model, including direct experience providing independent challenge to first-line business and operational functions.
  • Working knowledge of fraud typologies; consumer and commercial payment products and rails; cyber-enabled fraud; account takeover; synthetic identity; scams; money-mule activity; and their intersection with AML/BSA, technology, and operational risk obligations.
  • Experience preparing risk reporting and presenting to senior management committees and/or Board-level risk committees.
  • Master's degree in business, finance, risk management, criminal justice, or a related field.
  • Professional certification such as Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE), Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialist (CAMS), or Financial Risk Manager (FRM).
  • Prior experience in a second-line fraud risk, payments risk, operational risk, or financial crimes oversight role at a large U.S. bank or bank holding company, with direct exposure to OCC, Federal Reserve, or FDIC supervisory expectations.
  • Experience building, standing up, or significantly redesigning a fraud, payments, financial crimes, or operational risk operating model, including governance, policy, risk appetite, reporting, effective challenge, and clearly defined first-line and second-line accountability.
  • Familiarity with payment products and rails, fraud analytics, AI/ML-enabled detection capabilities, identity and authentication (CIAM) strategy, and enterprise case-management platforms.
  • Strong executive presence and the ability to influence senior stakeholders across Risk, Compliance, Legal, Technology, Cyber, and business-line leadership without direct authority.
Special Skills, Abilities & Competencies
  • Independent judgment and the ability to provide credible challenge to senior first-line leaders.
  • Strong analytical skills, with the ability to synthesize complex, cross-domain risk data into clear executive and Board-level narratives.
  • Transformational and collaborative leadership style, with a demonstrated ability to build new capabilities, shape future-state operating models, and create consensus across historically siloed functions, including Fraud, Payments, Risk, Compliance, Cyber, and AML.
  • Sound understanding of enterprise risk management frameworks, RCSA methodology, and issue management processes.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including experience drafting policy, committee materials, and Board-ready reporting.
Minimum Qualifications
  • 12+ years of relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • High school Diploma or GED equivalent
