Job summary

Corning Inc. in North Carolina is seeking a Sr Development Engineer to lead tooling and manufacturing equipment for Hyperscale Data Center quartz machining, aiming to improve product attributes and manufacturing output.

You will design, validate drilling and grinding tooling, and develop automation platforms to enable advanced optical fiber production. Collaborate with controls and process teams to advance technology throughout development stages.

Qualifications

• Understanding of mechanical design fundamentals including statics and dynamics, tolerances, materials, and precision machining.
• Background in manufacturing equipment development, with knowledge of manufacturing processes and relevant physical phenomena (heat and mass transfer, fluid mechanics, optics).
• Equipment design and development from concept to assembly for manufacturing—layouts, components, and drawings.
• Automation design and development including motion control, sensors, pneumatics/hydraulics, and safety integration.

Responsibilities

• Serve as tooling development lead for Hyperscale Data Center quartz machining, specify, design, and validate drilling, grinding, and machining tooling, fixturing, and workholding.
• Design and industrialize Hyperscale Data Center manufacturing equipment platforms and automation to enable new optical fiber manufacturing processes.
• Identify concepts for manufacturing equipment and tooling, design, build and test concepts to improve equipment and processes.
• Specify, integrate, test and validate mechanical hardware and automation, including motion control and safety systems.
• Collaborate with controls, process engineering, equipment deployment, and manufacturing receivers during later stages of technology development.
