Job summary

Caterpillar Inc. in Lafayette, IN, seeks a Senior Design Engineer to lead development of complex engine systems for the GCM34 gas engine, collaborating with global teams to transform ideas into robust, manufacturable products.

You will drive design governance and system architecture decisions, mentor engineers, and push improvements in quality, reliability, and performance across the product lifecycle. This on-site role requires relocation and occasional travel, with relocation assistance

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
• Experience leading design of mechanical systems and products.
• Experience independently driving product development from concept through validation and release.
• Experience coordinating technical activities across multiple engineering disciplines.

Responsibilities

• Lead design and development of complex engine systems and components from concept through production implementation.
• Establish technical approaches and design strategies that satisfy customer, regulatory, manufacturing, performance, and reliability requirements.
• Drive concept development and evaluate design alternatives.
• Lead analyses, simulations, validation programs, and technical reviews for robust performance.
• Provide technical leadership to engineers, project teams, suppliers, and partners.
• Coordinate cross-functional development activities with manufacturing, quality, performance, controls, supply chain, and product support.
• Support worldwide dealer and O&M teams with technical questions about engines and interfaces.
• Analyze data to identify trends and drive product enhancements.
• Lead resolution of complex technical challenges with structured problem-solving.
• Influence system architecture decisions and long-term roadmaps.
• Drive product release, engineering changes, and design governance.
• Identify opportunities to improve engineering efficiency with new technologies and AI-enabled solutions.
• Mentor engineers and foster technical excellence and innovation.
• Lead initiatives to improve quality, reliability, manufacturability, and customer value.
