Job summary

UnCruise Adventures in Juneau seeks a Chief Mate to supervise the deck team and assist with piloting, navigation, safety and guest interactions. Reports to the Master and leads docking, watch, and small boat operations on Southeast Alaska itineraries.

The position requires extensive vessel experience, STCW certifications, and strong English communication. Expect 12-hour shifts, high guest service standards, and active safety leadership at sea.

Qualifications

• Experience operating port-to-port in Southeast Alaska.
• 360 sea days of Mate experience on passenger vessels with supervisory duties.
• Excellent crisis management skills with quick, sound judgment.
• Strong time management: multitask, prioritize, meet deadlines.
• Proficient with MS Word and MS Excel.
• Communicate effectively in one-on-one and group settings; strong written English.
• Voyage planning and navigational calculation ability.
• Ability to interpretInstructions in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.

Responsibilities

• Train and supervise the deck team in docking, anchoring, watch duties and safety.
• Direct communications between bridge, crew and dock personnel during docking.
• Evaluate performance, address discipline, and document crew actions.
• Maintain professional demeanor with guests and crew; participate in guest activities.
• Assume command if the Captain is incapacitated and assist with vessel operations.
• Inspect vessel for cleanliness and maintain deck supplies and maintenance.
• Act as vessel security officer and prepare for Coast Guard inspections.
• Review watch lists and enforce company safety policies.
