Job summary

The City of New York's Department of Consumer and Worker Protection seeks a City Research Scientist to help enforce worker and consumer protection laws. The role involves developing data collection and analysis strategies, supporting investigators and attorneys, and building systems for automated data handling.

Ideal candidates bring advanced programming and statistical skills, strong writing ability, and experience mapping legal concepts to data structures.

Qualifications

  • Master's or doctorate with specialization in physical, biological, environmental or social science and appropriate experience.
  • Assignment Level I requires a master's degree in a physical, biological, environmental science or public health.
  • Assignment Level II+ requires a doctorate or a master's with 3+ years of research experience (or equivalent).

Responsibilities

  • Identify data needed to evaluate compliance with NYC worker and consumer protection laws.
  • Communicate with counsel and staff to deliver responsive data and interpretation information.
  • Develop data analysis tools to describe business practices and calculate damages.
  • Assess how DCWP uses data in investigations and litigation and suggest improvements.
  • Recommend changes to laws, rules, and agency guidance related to data functions.
  • Assist with analysis of economic data and process design/automation.
