Job summary

BILL’s Data Platform team designs and operates BILL’s core data infrastructure, enabling real-time and batch processing across the organization. You will own critical data platform capabilities from ingestion to serving, including the feature store, query engine, knowledge graph, and search, while guiding cross-team standards and architectural choices.

You will innovate at scale, migrate workloads, and partner with ML/AI, Risk, Payments, and Analytics teams to deliver durable platform solutions.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or equivalent work experience.
• 8+ years of experience in data engineering, distributed systems, or software engineering with a heavy focus on data infrastructure.
• 5+ years on data platform, data infrastructure, or data systems teams (not purely analytics).
• Expertise in distributed systems design for data workloads, including streaming, batch, and real-time serving trade-offs.
• Hands-on with event streaming platforms (Kafka, Flink, Spark Streaming) and CDC-based ingestion patterns.
• Strong batch processing experience (Airflow, dbt, Spark/Glue).
• Experience with modern open table formats and data lake architectures (Iceberg, Delta Lake).
• Familiarity with data access and serving layers (Trino/Starburst, Presto), feature stores, vector stores, or graph databases.
• Expert-level SQL and strong Python, with good CI/CD, testing, observability.

Responsibilities

• Drive platform-wide technical decisions and mentor the team.
• Own and evolve critical infrastructure across the full data lifecycle.
• Architect and own data platform capabilities end-to-end (ingestion to serving).
• Define technical direction for cross-cutting problems and real-time serving architectures.
• Drive design and delivery of new capabilities from inception to GA with reference implementations and SLAs.
• Establish and maintain architectural standards and engineering patterns.
• Lead multi-phase migrations and infrastructure modernization.
• Partner with other BILL teams to translate data needs into durable platform solutions.
• Mentor senior engineers and shape engineering culture and quality.
• Own and continuously improve production systems for reliability and cost efficiency.
