Job summary

Strava is seeking a Senior Data Engineer to design and operate scalable data systems supporting analytics, data science, and business use cases. You will build robust data pipelines, data models, and governance workflows across a modern data warehouse and data lake.

You’ll contribute to ingestion, quality, privacy, and GDPR workflows while advancing dbt, Airflow, and Spark-based tooling. A hybrid model requires on-site presence in San Francisco three days weekly.

Qualifications

• 3–5+ years of professional experience in Data Engineering, Data Infrastructure, or a related field.
• Strong expertise in SQL and data modeling for large-scale analytical systems.
• Experience building and operating ETL/ELT and data processing systems (dbt, Airflow, Spark).
• Proficient in Python, Scala, Java, or Go; comfortable applying software engineering to data systems.
• Knowledge of modern data warehouse and data lake architectures (Snowflake, Databricks, BigQuery, Redshift, Iceberg, Delta Lake).
• Understanding data governance, lineage, retention, deletion, and GDPR/privacy requirements.
• Experience with production-grade data quality, monitoring, and observability.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and operate foundational data systems and shared data assets for analytics and business use cases.
• Build and evolve scalable data ingestion and transformation frameworks across data lake and data warehouse.
• Develop reusable tooling and abstractions for data pipelines and transformations (dbt, ETL/ELT).
• Design durable domain data models with clear semantics and ownership.
• Create workflows for data governance, privacy, and regulatory requirements including GDPR deletions.
• Improve reliability and observability with testing, lineage, monitoring, and alerting.
• Optimize data processing for performance, cost, and scalability in warehouse and lake environments.
• Collaborate with data engineers, data scientists, and security to set system-wide standards.
