Job summary

Strava seeks a Senior Data Engineer to design and operate scalable data systems supporting analytics, data science, and critical business use cases. You will build data pipelines, domain data models, and GDPR-compliant workflows, while advancing our data warehouse and lake architectures.

The role emphasizes collaboration across data, software, security, and infra teams, with a hybrid work model requiring three days on-site in San Francisco. Strong SQL, dbt, and cloud experience are essential.

Qualifications

• You have 3-5+ years of professional experience in Data Engineering or related field.
• You have strong SQL and data modeling expertise for large-scale analytics.
• You have experience building ETL/ELT and data processing systems with dbt, Airflow, Spark.
• You can develop reusable tooling and abstractions for data pipelines.
• You are proficient in Python, Scala, Java, or Go and apply software engineering to data systems.
• You understand modern data warehouse/lake architectures (Snowflake, Databricks, BigQuery, Redshift, Iceberg/Delta Lake).
• You are familiar with data governance concepts (lineage, retention, deletion, access, GDPR).
• You have experience with cloud infrastructure (AWS, GCP, Azure).

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and operate foundational data systems and assets for analytics and business use cases.
• Build scalable data ingestion and transformation frameworks across data lake and warehouse.
• Develop reusable data engineering tools and abstractions around dbt and pipelines.
• Design high-quality domain data models (user, activity, subscriptions) with clear semantics.
• Create data governance workflows for privacy, GDPR, retention and access control.
• Improve reliability via testing, data quality checks, lineage, monitoring, and observability.
• Optimize processing and storage for performance, scalability, and cost across warehouse and lake.
• Collaborate with analytics engineers, software engineers, data scientists, security, and infra teams.
