Job summary

Tempus AI seeks a Senior Data Engineer to build and own the data platform underpinning our Patient Evaluation Engine. You will develop pipelines for EHR, genomics, and imaging data, while shaping the data model and governing data quality in a HIPAA-regulated environment.

You’ll implement event-driven ingestion, Pub/Sub workflows, and BigQuery-based transformations with dbt. Strong Python/TypeScript and Terraform skills are required for scalable, secure deployment.

Qualifications

• Total Professional Experience: 5+ years building data-intensive software systems in production.
• 3+ years focused on data engineering, pipeline ownership, or data modeling, ideally in healthcare or life sciences.
• 2+ years hands-on building on Google Cloud with demonstrated ownership of infrastructure decisions.
• 2+ years in HIPAA-regulated environments with EMR integrations and healthcare data standards.
• 1+ years hands-on building with Large Language Models — agentic workflows or autonomous tool use.

Responsibilities

• Build pipelines feeding agents and enable real-time inference over structured and unstructured data.
• Own the warehouse and transformations with dbt models on BigQuery and quality tests.
• Model multi-modal patient records with normalized and dimensional design.
• Move data through event-driven services: Pub/Sub, subscriptions, dead-letter handling, retries.
• Make data agent-ready with data access patterns and metadata layers for autonomous agents.
• Develop TypeScript services and APIs to handle agent input/output and orchestrate agents.
• Own the platform’s Google Cloud footprint using Terraform (BigQuery, Pub/Sub, Cloud SQL, etc.).
• Scale for federated hospital networks with high availability and secure data sharing.
• Ensure data quality and lineage with traceability to source systems.
• Build observability and human-in-the-loop checks for transparent evaluation.
