Job summary

Tempus AI seeks a Senior Data Engineer to build and own the data platform underpinning the Patient Evaluation Engine. You will design pipelines, manage data models, and ensure real-time, HIPAA-regulated data flows across hybrid cloud environments.

You’ll work with Python and TypeScript, BigQuery, Pub/Sub, Terraform, and dbt, delivering scalable, observable, and secure data infrastructure for AI agents operating on structured and unstructured clinical data.

Qualifications

• 5+ years building data-intensive software systems in production.
• 3+ years focused on data engineering, pipeline ownership, or data modeling, healthcare preferred.
• 2+ years on Google Cloud with ownership of infrastructure decisions.
• 2+ years in HIPAA-regulated environments with EMR data experience.
• 1+ years building with AI data engineering concepts (RAG, agentic workflows).
• Experience handling structured and unstructured data at scale for AI consumption.

Responsibilities

• Build and operate data pipelines feeding AI agents across EHR, genomics, and imaging data.
• Own the warehouse and transformations with dbt models on BigQuery, including tests and documentation.
• Model multi-modal patient records with normalized and dimensional design.
• Move data through event-driven services using Pub/Sub, with retries and idempotency.
• Develop data access patterns and metadata layers for autonomous AI discovery and querying.
• Write TypeScript services and APIs to handle agent I/O and coordinate services.
• Own infrastructure on Google Cloud using Terraform (BigQuery datasets, Pub/Sub, Cloud SQL, Cloud Storage).
• Scale across federated hospital networks with multi-tenancy and high availability.
• Implement data quality and lineage monitoring to ensure ground truth for evaluations.
• Build observability and human-in-the-loop checks to support trusted automated evaluation.
