Job summary

GRAIL is seeking a Senior Data Engineer to lead the data platform that connects lab instruments, automation systems, and operational platforms. You will architect and own complex ingestion and transformation pipelines, set standards, and mentor engineers in a fast-paced, regulated environment.

You will collaborate with lab operations, data science, and automation engineering to deliver reliable, well-modeled data and enable analytics, dashboards, and AI-enabled workflows.

Qualifications

• Degree in Computer Science, Math, Software Engineering, Data Science, Life Sciences, Physics or similar field.
• Typically 3+ years in data engineering, analytics engineering, or software development with BS/BA; or 2+ with a Master’s.
• Advanced proficiency in SQL, including performance optimization and complex transformation logic.
• Strong programming skills (Python, Rust, C++ or similar).
• Solid understanding of ETL/ELT, relational databases, data modeling, and structured data.
• Ability to own data pipelines end-to-end and work independently.
• Commitment to data quality, reliability and accuracy.
• Ability to collaborate with technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Responsibilities

• Architect, build, and maintain complex data pipelines across lab instruments and platforms.
• Own critical pipelines end-to-end from design to production operations.
• Define and evolve data architecture and modeling standards across the team.
• Deliver clean datasets for analytics, reporting, and AI systems.
• Develop and optimize SQL and transformation logic for reliable data models.
• Build datasets for dashboards, analytics, monitoring, and AI workflows.
• Design orchestration, testing, monitoring, and alerting to catch data issues early.
• Enforce data validation and quality standards across the platform.
• Mentor junior engineers and contribute to engineering practices and standards.
• Document pipelines and models for reproducibility and compliance.
