Job summary

GRAIL is seeking a Senior Data Engineer on the Operational Technology team based on-site in RTP, North Carolina. Qualifications

• Degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Software Engineering, Data Science, Life Sciences, Physics or similar field.
• BS/BA degree with 5+ years or Master's degree with 3+ years of relevant experience in data engineering, analytics engineering, or software development.
• Advanced proficiency in SQL, including performance optimization and complex transformation logic.
• Strong proficiency with programming languages such as Python, Rust, C++, or similar.
• Solid understanding of ETL/ELT pipeline design, relational databases, data modeling, and structured or semi-structured data.
• Demonstrated ability to own data pipelines end to end and work independently on diverse problems.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to data quality, reliability and accuracy.
• Ability to collaborate with both technical and non-technical stakeholders in a fast-changing environment.
• Analytical mindset and eagerness to solve difficult technical problems.

Responsibilities

• Architect, build, and maintain complex data pipelines ingesting data from lab instruments, automation systems, sequencers, and databases.
• Own critical pipelines end to end from design through production operation, leveraging limited precedents.
• Define and evolve data architecture, modeling standards, and engineering patterns across the team.
• Deliver clean, trustworthy datasets for analytics, reporting, and AI systems; enable troubleshooting and platform improvements.
• Develop and optimize SQL and transformation logic to model raw data into reliable datasets.
• Design datasets/models for dashboards, analytics, process monitoring, and governed AI workflows.
• Implement orchestration, testing, monitoring and alerting to detect data quality or processing issues early.
• Establish and enforce data validation and quality standards across the platform.
• Collaborate with systems engineers, lab ops, data scientists, and automation engineers; mentor junior engineers.
• Document pipelines and data models for reproducibility and compliance with ISO, CLIA, CAP, NYS, GMP, and FDA requirements.
• Continuously improve technical skills and engineering practices.
