Job summary

GRAIL is seeking a Senior Data Engineer for the Operational Technology team in RTP, North Carolina. You will own the data platform that connects lab instruments, automation systems, and operational platforms to a trusted data foundation.

Lead complex ingestion and transformation pipelines end to end and mentor engineers in a fast-paced, regulated environment. You will define data architecture, validate data quality, and collaborate with data scientists, lab operations, and engineers.

Qualifications

• Degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Software Engineering, Data Science, Life Sciences, Physics or similar field.
• BS/BA with 5+ years or MS with 3+ years in data engineering, analytics engineering, or software development.
• Advanced proficiency in SQL and performance optimization.
• Strong programming skills in Python, Rust, C++, or similar.
• Solid understanding of ETL/ELT, data modeling, and structured/semi-structured data.
• Ability to own pipelines end-to-end and work independently.
• Attention to detail, data quality, reliability and accuracy.
• Ability to collaborate with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Analytical mindset and continuous learning.
• Experience with data pipeline orchestration and transformation tools.

Responsibilities

• Architect, build, and maintain complex data pipelines ingesting data from lab instruments and systems.
• Own pipelines end-to-end from design to production operations.
• Define and evolve data architecture, modeling standards, and engineering patterns.
• Support analytics, reporting, and AI systems with clean datasets and timely extracts.
• Develop and optimize SQL and transformation logic to model data.
• Build datasets and models used by dashboards, analytics, and AI workflows.
• Design and implement orchestration, testing, monitoring, and alerting for data quality.
• Establish data validation and quality standards across the platform.
• Collaborate with systems engineers, lab operations, data scientists, and automation engineers.
• Mentor junior engineers and contribute to engineering standards.
• Document pipelines and data models for reproducibility and compliance.
• Continuously improve technical skills and practices.
