Job summary

Travelers Data Engineering team builds pipelines that contextualize data for the enterprise. As a Senior Data Engineer you accelerate analytics growth by guiding the team and delivering data solutions that translate complex data into user-friendly terms.

You will design, build, and deploy data products that support AI, ML and BI initiatives. You will lead complex data projects, ensure data governance and quality, mentor teammates, and collaborate with business partners to align data solutions

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in STEM related field or equivalent.
  • Ten years of related experience.
  • Expertise designing and building scalable, self-healing, cloud-native distributed compute data pipelines using AWS native services and/or Databricks as the primary compute and orchestration platform, loading into enterprise data platforms such as Snowflake.
  • Hands-on experience building analytics pipelines using transformation frameworks such as dbt within framework-based, cloud-native pipeline architectures.
  • Expertise designing and deploying production-grade, multi-agent AI applications using agent orchestration frameworks and runtimes such as AWS AgentCore or Databricks AgentBricks.
  • Experience integrating structured and unstructured data sources through tool-calling patterns, including the Model Context Protocol (MCP), to surface actionable insights at scale.
  • Strong foundational knowledge of large language model APIs, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) patterns, vector databases, and embedding strategies, with the ability to apply these within multi-agent architectures to enable context-aware, data-grounded AI applications.
  • Advanced knowledge of tools, techniques, and manipulation including cloud platforms, programming languages, and modern software engineering practices.
  • Strong delivery skills including the ability to determine the software design strategy and methodology to be used for efforts, use automated tests, analysis, and informed feedback loops to ensure the quality and production readiness of work before release, monitor the health of work efforts and that of adjacent systems.
  • Demonstrated track record of domain expertise including the ability to develop business partnerships and influence priorities by identifying solutions that are aligned with current business objective and closely follow industry trends relevant to domain, understanding how to apply them, and sharing knowledge with coworkers.
  • Strong problem solver who utilizes data and proofs of concepts to find creative solutions to difficult problems involving a significant number of factors with broad implications, reflects on solutions, measures impact, and uses that information to ideate and optimize.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to develop business partnerships, describe technology concepts in ways the business can understand, document initiatives in a concise and clear manner, and empathetically and attentively listen to others thoughts and ideas.
  • Ability to lead and take action even when there is no clear owner, inspire and motivate others, and be effective at influencing team members.

Responsibilities

  • Build and operationalize complex data solutions, correct problems, apply transformations, and recommend data cleansing/quality improvements.
  • Design complex data solutions, incorporate new data sources and ensure consistency across projects.
  • Analyze complex data sources to determine value and use in analytics.
  • Incorporate data governance, security, and quality.
  • Serve as data/tech SME to support delivery and educate end users on data products/analytic environment.
  • Analyze data and system defects and incidents of high complexity and resolve.
  • Collaborate across teams to support delivery and educate users on data products.
