Job summary

Summit County Government (CO) seeks the County Engineer to provide professional oversight of planning, design, review, construction, and operation of the County’s transportation system. The role ensures compliance with standards, policies, and regulations while leading the Engineering Department’s daily operations.

The candidate will manage capital projects, coordinate with stakeholders, and supervise personnel.

Qualifications

• Minimum qualifications include a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or related discipline from an accredited university.
• At least ten years of work experience in the public sector transportation field with five years of experience as a division supervisor or equivalent.
• Experience working with the public in difficult situations, a customer service orientation, and ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

Responsibilities

• Plan, manage, review and approve Engineering projects.
• Prepare annual Engineering Department operations and capital budgets; prepare bid specifications for capital projects.
• Oversee personnel management within the department.
• Coordinate with stakeholders on road & bridge, floodplain, water quality, and development impacts.
• Establish standards for internal road geometries and connections to County roads.
• Respond to citizens' requests and provide recommendations to County Management on maintenance and budgets.
• Maintain relationships with other public works agencies and participate in emergency management groups.
• Attend community meetings on behalf of the Engineering Department.
• Prepare detailed reports for County Management and state/federal agencies.
• Draft and interpret water quality, grading, excavation, ROW, and transportation standards.
