Job summary

Tama County is seeking a County Engineer to plan, direct and coordinate the work of a large staff involved with the design, construction and maintenance of the County’s Secondary Roads system. This role includes preparing reports, plans and budgets for Board approval and coordinating with IDOT as needed.

The ideal candidate will lead a diverse workforce, communicate effectively with county management, employees and the public, and ensure efficient performance of all engineering work whether done

  • Ability to prepare budgets and construction programs for approval.
  • Strong communication with boards, management, staff and public.

  • Plan, direct and coordinate design, construction and maintenance of the County’s Secondary Roads system.
  • Prepare annual reports, specifications, plans, construction schedules, environmental studies and related documents.
  • Advise the Board on problems, practices and maintenance; prepare budgets and indicate funding sources; oversee work by contract or staff.

Job description

The primary purpose of the County Engineer is to plan, direct and coordinate the work of a large support staff involved with the design, construction and maintenance of the County’s Secondary Roads system: prepares or directs preparation and modification of reports, specifications, plans, construction schedules, environmental and related impact studies; advises the Boards as to the problems, practices and manner in which roads are maintained; prepares annual budget and construction program for the Board of Supervisors and I.D.O.T. approval indicating yearly priorities and estimated funding sources; responsible for the efficient, economical and performance of all engineering work done by contract or support staff. Must have ability to lead a diverse workforce, communicate effectively with County management, employees and the general public.
