Job summary

Barnard College seeks an Assistant/Associate General Counsel for Risk and Compliance to lead enterprise risk management and regulatory compliance. The role partners with senior leadership to design and implement policies, oversee insurance and risk transfer, and support governance and investigations.

The successful candidate will provide strategic legal guidance, monitor laws affecting the College, and collaborate with internal stakeholders across Finance, Operations, and external counsel.

Qualifications

• Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree required.
• Admission to the state bar (New York preferred) and in good standing.
• Minimum of 5 years of legal, risk management, or compliance experience, preferably in higher education, nonprofit, or corporate sectors.
• Experience in enterprise risk management, contract negotiation, insurance, and compliance.
• Higher education experience is a plus.
• Assistant/Associate level will depend on experience.

Responsibilities

• Oversee, monitor and advise on College compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
• Monitor legislative and regulatory actions and court rulings affecting compliance requirements.
• Serve as liaison between OGC, Finance & Operations, and external counsel on risk matters.
• Develop and oversee enterprise risk management program across the College.
• Provide legal and risk analysis for policies, contracts, and initiatives to ensure compliance.
• Ensure appropriate insurance coverage and risk mitigation in contracts.
