Job summary

New York State Department of Motor Vehicles seeks a Senior Attorney/Assistant Counsel to support its Counsels Office. Responsibilities include litigation in state and federal courts, defending the agency in discrimination cases, and appearing in proceedings.

Duties also cover drafting and interpreting legislation and regulations, procurement support, drafting contracts, MOUs, IFBs and RFPs, researching legal issues, and advising agency business units.

Qualifications

• Must have admission to the NYS Bar and 24 months of post-bar legal experience, or 12 months as an Assistant Attorney 3.
• Strong research and writing skills are essential.
• Experience handling litigation and advisory work for a state agency is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Assist in litigation in state and federal courts involving DMV.
• Defend the agency in discrimination or civil rights matters.
• Appear on behalf of DMV in hearings and proceedings.
• Draft and interpret legislation and regulations for DMV policy.
• Draft and review contracts, MOUs, IFBs and RFPs.
• Research legal issues and provide clear legal analyses.
