Job summary

Markel is seeking an experienced casualty claims expert to lead the most complex, high-exposure claims within the Casualty Claims division. The role offers significant autonomy and acts as a resource for examiners and managers while supporting underwriting with legal guidance.

US work authorization is required; the position emphasizes leadership, mentoring, and collaboration with multiple internal teams across Markel Claims.

Qualifications

• Law degree preferred.
• Must have or be eligible to receive claims adjuster license.

Responsibilities

• Manage a full caseload of the most complex/high-exposure Casualty Claims.
• Analyze coverage, communicate positions and manage related coverage litigation.
• Proactively manage outside counsel to control legal strategy and expenses.
• Conduct jury verdict research, negotiations and coverage analyses.
• Direct investigation into underlying litigation and develop strategy for resolution.
• Evaluate information on coverage, liability, and damages to determine exposure and set reserves.
• Negotiate and settle claims or advise on trial strategy where appropriate.
• Prepare reports for underwriting, claims and senior management.
• Mentor and train junior examiners and managers in Casualty Claims.
• Advise underwriting on contractual wordings and policy issues.
• Present on developments in coverage and US litigation landscape.
• Travel to mediations, trials and conferences; coordinate with other departments.
