Job summary

Markel is seeking an experienced casualty claims expert capable of handling high-exposure matters with autonomy and leadership. You will guide coverage analyses, coordinate with outside counsel, and provide strategic direction to underwriters and senior management.

The role requires a law degree and 10+ years in claims, with flexibility to travel for mediations and trials. Strong communication and mentoring skills are essential in a fast-paced, global environment.

Qualifications

• 10+ years of claims handling and management experience.
• Law degree preferred; claims adjuster license eligible.
• US work authorization required; visa sponsorship not provided.

Responsibilities

• Manage a full case load of the most complex/high exposure claims with minimal oversight.
• Analyze coverage, communicate coverage positions and manage related coverage litigation.
• Proactively manage outside counsel to control legal strategy and expense spend.
• Perform jury verdict research, negotiations and coverage analyses to reduce reliance on outside counsel.
• Conduct, coordinate, and direct investigation into underlying litigation and strategy for resolution.
• Evaluate information on coverage, liability, and damages to determine exposure and set reserves.
• Negotiate and settle claims or provide recommendations for trials.
• Prepare reports for underwriting, claims and senior management.
• Assist in training and mentoring of claims examiners and managers in Casualty Claims.
• Advise underwriting on contractual wordings and legal issues related to policy issuance.
• Regularly present to underwriting and claims on topics regarding developments in coverage and US litigation.
• Serve as technical resource to subordinates and others in Markel Claims.
• Participate in special projects or assist team members as requested.
• Collaborate with Claims Vendor Management, Actuarial, Underwriting, Finance, IT and Risk Management as an official Casualty Claims representative.
• Travel to mediations, trials, and conferences as required.
• Manage more junior associates on the Casualty Claims team when required.
• Adhere to Fair Claims Practices regulations and internal Claims Quality Performance Objectives.
