The Team

Upstart’s Legal team is a key component of the company, helping Upstart innovate in the fintech space across multiple products and supporting its mission of expanding access to credit based on true risk. We are a team of savvy, hardworking, and genuinely nice individuals collaborating closely with the business to achieve its objectives.

As a Senior Legal Counsel at Upstart, you will lead support for our capital markets operations team in day-to-day matters such as asset-backed securitizations, warehouse financings, and investment funds. This role requires someone who is adaptable, innovative, and possesses a broad knowledge of regulations, capital markets practices, and cross-functional system development and enhancement.

Position Location - This role is available remotely.

Time Zone Requirements - The team operates on East/West Coast time zones.

Travel Requirements - As a digital-first company, most work can be accomplished remotely. Employees can live and work anywhere in the U.S. but are encouraged to spend high-quality time in-person collaborating via regular onsite meetings, which typically occur once or twice per quarter for 2-4 days.

How you’ll make an impact:

• Advise on reporting and reconciliation enhancements
• Work closely with our capital markets and finance teams
• Support team members in addressing issues as they arise
• Provide legal and strategic guidance to assess and mitigate legal risks by understanding the business deeply and collaborating with internal clients, including accounting, data analytics, product, treasury, operations, and tax
• Collaborate across functions to improve processes and systems

What we’re looking for:

• Minimum requirements:
• J.D. degree with solid academic credentials and active state bar membership
• 10+ years of experience at a top-tier law firm, financial institution, or regulator, with expertise in regulated markets, payment practices, and cross-functional systems
• Self-starter who thrives with limited supervision and enjoys challenges
• Eager to develop expertise in new legal areas
• Adaptability and flexibility to work in a fast-paced environment

• Strong law firm training
• NY or CA bar membership preferred
