The Team

Upstart’s Legal team plays a vital role in innovating within the fintech space across multiple products, supporting our mission of expanding access to credit based on true risk. We are a team of savvy, hardworking, and genuinely nice individuals collaborating closely with the business to achieve our objectives.

As a Senior Legal Counsel at Upstart, you will lead support for our capital markets operations team in daily matters such as asset-backed securitizations, warehouse financings, and investment funds. This role requires adaptability, out-of-the-box thinking, and a broad knowledge of regulations, capital markets practices, and cross-functional system development.

Position Details

Location: Remote

Time Zone: East/West Coast hours

Travel: Mostly remote work with occasional in-person collaboration, typically once or twice per quarter for 2-4 days.

How You’ll Make an Impact

• Advise on reporting and reconciliation enhancements
• Collaborate with capital markets and finance teams
• Support team members in resolving issues
• Provide legal and strategic guidance to assess and mitigate risks by understanding the business and collaborating with internal teams such as accounting, data analytics, product, treasury, operations, and tax
• Work across functions to improve processes and systems

What We’re Looking For

Minimum Requirements:

• J.D. degree with strong academic credentials and a valid state bar membership
• 10+ years of experience at a top-tier law firm, financial institution, or regulator, with expertise in regulated markets, payment practices, and cross-functional systems
• Self-motivated, thrives with limited supervision, and enjoys challenges
• Eager to develop expertise in new legal areas
• Flexible and adaptable in a fast-paced environment

Preferred Qualifications:

• Well-organized with broad knowledge of financial regulations and market practices
• Strong law firm training
• Bar membership in NY or CA preferred

Compensation & Benefits

The anticipated base salary range for this role in the U.S. is $240,000—$307,000 USD, depending on location, skills, and experience. Upstart also offers target bonuses, equity, and comprehensive benefits including medical, dental, vision, and 401k.
