Job summary

The North Carolina Department of Adult Correction operates Alexander Correctional Institution in Taylorsville, NC, a closed custody male facility with about 1,000 beds. This role provides first-line supervision to Correctional Officer III’s and reports to a Correctional Lieutenant III or Housing Unit Manager.

Responsibilities include assigning posts, overseeing staff performance, coordinating shift coverage, and ensuring security, health, and safety for offenders.

Qualifications

• High School or GED diploma and three years of experience as a Correctional Officer, or two years of experience as a Correctional Officer III; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Necessary Special Qualifications Must be eligible for certification by the N.C. Criminal Justice Education and Training and Standards Commission.

Responsibilities

• Assigning lower-level custody staff to a particular area or post.
• Evaluating and overseeing officer activities and performance and ensuring custody, security, and welfare of offenders is maintained.
• Coordinating work schedules to ensure shift coverage, implementing SOPs and ensuring rules and regulations are followed.
• Managing the facility on occasion of being the highest-ranking custody staff on the premises or the Officer-in-Charge (OIC).
• Ensuring that staff are fully trained and that proper conduct, actions, and procedures are being followed.
• Maintaining facility security through regular inspections to ensure compliance with governing regulations and standards.
