Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Risk Management, Insurance, Business, Finance, Legal Studies, or a related discipline; equivalent relevant experience may be considered.

  • Strong working knowledge of auto and general liability insurance, claims administration, reserving, settlement strategy, and risk transfer.

Responsibilities

  • Own and actively manage a large portfolio of workers’ compensation, automobile liability, and general liability claims from first notice through closure.
  • Control total claim costs through early intervention, appropriate reserving, settlement negotiation, subrogation, recovery opportunities, and timely claim resolution.
  • Establish claim-management strategy for low- to high-severity, routine to complex, non-litigated, potentially catastrophic and catastrophic claims.
  • Regularly review open claims, reserves, payments, liability exposure, and projected costs; challenge unsupported assumptions and excessive reserves.

  • Evaluate settlement opportunities and negotiate from a position of strong factual and financial understanding.
  • Identify subrogation, contribution and other recovery opportunities and ensure those opportunities are pursued and resolved.
  • Partner with Legal, Finance, Human Resources, Operations, Procurement, and business leaders to mitigate losses and prevent recurrence.
  • Analyze claims data and trends to identify systemic loss drivers, emerging exposures, operational weaknesses, and opportunities to reduce frequency and severity.
  • Prepare claim reviews, loss forecasts, dashboards, and financial analyses for senior leadership.
  • Work with Corporate EHS and Risk Management to support insurance renewals, loss modeling, exposure analysis, collateral requirements, and evaluation of risk-financing alternatives.
  • Partner with Legal to support defense and resolution of litigated claims.
  • Monitor compliance with applicable workers’ compensation, liability, insurance, reporting, and claims-handling requirements.
  • Develop and maintain strong controls, documentation standards, claim-management protocols, vendor performance expectations, and audit processes.
  • Conduct periodic claim audits and performance reviews of TPAs, carriers, and other service providers.
  • Maintain relentless focus on timely closure of claims while balancing financial, operational, employee, stakeholder, and reputational considerations.
  • Educate Operating Group EHS and Fleet Safety Leadership, and implement proactive strategies and systems – in conjunction with Corporate EHS/Fleet.
