Job summary

Saint Bernard is seeking a Controller to lead accounting and financial reporting from its HQ. You will own the general ledger, close processes, and a growing accounting team, delivering accurate financial statements to ownership.

A strong mix of technical accounting and business partnership in a fast-paced retail setting is essential. The role reports to the CFO and requires 7+ years in accounting with 3+ years in a leadership capacity, CPA, and deep GAAP knowledge.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
• CPA designation (active or inactive).
• 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, including 3+ years in a Controller or senior accounting leadership role.
• Strong technical accounting skills and thorough understanding of GAAP.
• Retail industry experience, multi-location and inventory-intensive environment.
• Hands-on leader capable at strategic and transactional levels.
• Excel and financial reporting tools; QuickBooks Online proficiency.

Responsibilities

• Own the monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close process across all store locations and e-commerce.
• Prepare and present accurate, timely financial statements (P&L, Balance Sheet, Cash Flow) with store-level detail.
• Ensure GAAP compliance across all financial reporting; manage external audit and tax relationships.
• Develop and maintain P&L reporting in the company’s preferred format (TY/LY by store, % of revenue, GP/ NOI highlights).
• Maintain the integrity of the general ledger, including accounts payable/receivable and inventory accounting.
• Oversee payroll processing and ensure accurate recording of compensation, benefits, and related accruals.
• Manage sales tax compliance across all locations and upcoming new markets.
• Establish and enforce internal controls to safeguard company assets and ensure accuracy of financial records.
• Monitor cash flow forecasting and coordinate with banking partners on facilities and debt service.
• Partner with ownership to build budgets and rolling forecasts; provide variance analysis and insights.
• Lead accounting team; optimize ERP/POS usage and data alignment with operations.
