Job summary

The Town of East Hartford is seeking a Deputy Director of Community Development to lead and manage current and long-range planning, land use, and development programs within the Development Department. This role serves as the town’s lead planner, supervising staff and coordinating with boards, commissions, and external partners to implement adopted plans and initiatives.

Responsibilities include overseeing development review, zoning administration, planning studies, and economic development

Qualifications

• Master’s degree in Urban Planning, Business Administration or closely related field.
• Four years of increasingly responsible experience in community affairs, urban planning, or municipal development.
• Experience in local government setting desirable.
• Certifications such as AICP or CEcD desirable.

Responsibilities

• Direct and coordinate current and long-range planning activities, including development review, zoning administration, planning studies, and implementation of adopted plans.
• Oversee land use review, coordinate with developers, attorneys, engineers, and public officials.
• Lead or coordinate long-range and special planning studies addressing land use, housing, transportation, and economic development.
• Supervise planning, zoning, and administrative staff; manage consultants and contracts.
• Assist Development Director with departmental operations and strategic initiatives.
